In the beginning of the 20th century, in Gérardmer, in a place called the Mill of Rouen (or Rouan), Charles-Auguste Leschemelle, an independent baker and his wife Marie-Elise, constructed a building on a ground gained by whether exchanges, purchase or transmission by their ancestors, next to the existing baker's shop and the mission of inhabitants.

In 1905, they opened a hotel, restaurant, café, grocery, baker's named « Hotel de la Jamagne », situated opposite to the tramway station. They run the business until the end of the First World War with their four daughters. Throughout the conflict, the hotel has been confiscated by the French army and the two youngest daughters Hélène and Suzette both married an officer who stayed in this institution after their return from the front.
